AfD member Tobias Rausch elected speaker of Saxony-Anhalt state parliament

Tobias Rausch of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) was elected speaker of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament on October 6, 2026, the first time an AfD member has held such a post since World War II. He won 48 of 82 votes cast, with support from the five-member BSW party and at least four other MPs from outside both parties. The AfD won nearly 44% of the vote in the September 6, 2026 state election but fell three seats short of an absolute majority.
