Former German intelligence chief August Hanning arrested on espionage and treason charges

August Hanning, who led Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, was arrested on October 6, 2026, on suspicion of treason, espionage, and trading state secrets. A former aide, identified as Manfred D., was also arrested for allegedly passing approximately 2,000 classified BND documents to Hanning in exchange for payment since 2010. Hanning allegedly used the classified material in private consulting work and on one occasion drafted an analysis for an officer of a foreign intelligence service; the foreign power involved has not been disclosed.

The split, in one line
Coverage now emphasizes institutional hierarchy and generational betrayal, a former spy chief's alleged espionage compounds systemic decay narratives, shifting focus from isolated operatives to compromised leadership and raising questions about whether Germany's security apparatus has been penetrated at the highest levels.
