Reflection AI releases Beam, an open-weight AI model to compete with Chinese open models
Reflection AI, a US startup founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers and backed by Nvidia, released its first open-weight AI model called Beam on October 5, 2026. The model is positioned as a Western alternative to dominant Chinese open-source models, with capabilities comparable to Z.ai's GLM-5.2 and approaching Alibaba's Qwen3.8-Max on coding and agentic tasks. Reflection says Beam requires three to four times less inference compute than comparable open models.

The split, in one line
Coverage splits between geopolitical competition (security/China framing) and market structure (open vs. closed models): Semafor/SCMP stress sovereign AI risks, The Hill emphasizes rivalry, while Axios reframes as oligopoly concerns and user control.
