Former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert dies at age 84.

Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican House speaker who served from 1999 to 2007, died on October 3 or 4, 2026, at his home in Illinois at age 84. He was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison in 2016 for banking violations related to hush-money payments concealing sexual abuse of teenage boys during his time as a high school wrestling coach. He was the highest-ranking elected U.S. official to serve time in federal prison.
