FBI arrests California woman accused of spying for China by surveilling Taiwan president's son

The FBI arrested Wanying Zhang, 34, of Irvine, California, at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday before her scheduled flight to China. She is charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent and allegedly surveilled Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te's son, Lai Ting-yu, and his family in Seattle in 2025, sending photos, videos, and license plate information to Chinese officials. Zhang will appear in a Los Angeles federal court on Monday.

The split, in one line
Coverage splits between FBI counterintelligence victory and Beijing's transnational repression, with Western outlets emphasizing civilian operatives targeting Taiwan officials' families in America while Beijing-based outlets downplay espionage scope; European press now joins Western consensus on direct surveillance of senior Taiwan political figures.
