Ebola death toll in Congo passes 4,000 as displacement camp is burned and emptied

Congo's Health Ministry reported 4,018 deaths among 8,300 Ebola cases since the outbreak was declared on May 15, 2026, making it the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in history. A U.N. displacement camp in Kigonze housing an Ebola transit center was burned and emptied of approximately 19,000 residents during a military operation searching for weapons. Health workers have protested unpaid wages and at least 50 health workers have died after contracting the virus.
