The U.S. Labor Department reported on October 2, 2026 that nonfarm payrolls increased by 29,000 in September, well below economist forecasts of 85,000-90,000. The unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1%, largely due to 485,000 workers entering the labor force. Prior month revisions reduced July and August payrolls by a combined 60,000.
