Copernicus climate service reports Europe's summer 2026 as third-warmest on record with record heat stress in western Europe
The EU's Copernicus Climate Monitoring Service reported that summer 2026 was Europe's third-warmest on record and the hottest on record for western Europe. A record 52% of Europe experienced "very strong" heat stress, with surface air temperatures in western Europe 2.5C above the recent decadal average. The report also found record-low European river flows, record-high sea surface temperatures, and widespread drought affecting nearly half the continent.
