California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law banning marriage under age 18 with no exceptions.

On September 30, 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1267, which sets 18 as the minimum age for marriage and domestic partnerships in the state with no exceptions. The law repeals previous provisions allowing minors to marry with parental consent and judicial approval. California becomes the 18th state to ban child marriage without exception.
