DOJ files judicial misconduct complaint against Minnesota federal judges for New York Times interviews

The Justice Department filed a judicial misconduct complaint with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals against nearly all active federal district judges in Minnesota after they spoke to the New York Times about the Trump administration's immigration enforcement operation, Operation Metro Surge. Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the complaint on September 30, 2026, alongside indictments of 10 noncitizens for election-related offenses. The DOJ asked the appeals court to order the judges to recuse themselves from Department of Homeland Security cases.

The split, in one line
Pro-administration outlets frame judges' media comments as ethics violations amid Trump's immigration enforcement surge, while skeptics highlight past stalled complaints and question whether discussing docket pressure truly breaches ethics codes; Breitbart and The Federalist escalate to partisan obstruction framing, intensifying the ideological divide.
