US, Denmark, and Greenland sign security agreement expanding US military presence in Greenland

On September 22, 2026, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland signed a trilateral security agreement on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The deal allows the US to expand its military presence at Pituffik Space Base and establish new defense areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, while reaffirming Danish sovereignty over Greenland. The agreement bars non-NATO countries from establishing military installations in Greenland and remains in effect even if Greenland gains independence.
