NATO chiefs of defence elected German Gen. Carsten Breuer as the next chair of the alliance's military committee at a meeting in Copenhagen on September 19, 2026. Canada's Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan ran against Breuer for the position. The current chair, Italy's Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, will leave his post in 2027.
