Indonesia receives its first aircraft carrier, a former Italian navy vessel, amid military upgrade drive.
Indonesia took delivery of the 41-year-old former Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi at Tanjung Priok seaport in North Jakarta. Italy agreed to give the carrier to Indonesia in March to bolster defence ties, and Indonesia's Finance Ministry approved $450 million for the carrier programme. The vessel will be renamed KRI Sriwijaya and is expected to serve 15 to 20 years.
