CBO report estimates Iran war has cost the US $38 billion and will increase inflation
The Congressional Budget Office released a report on September 15, 2026, estimating the U.S. war with Iran has cost approximately $38 billion from February 28 through August 1, 2026, with projected monthly costs of $2-3 billion. The CBO found the war has depleted U.S. munitions stockpiles, which could take five years or longer to rebuild, and will add roughly 0.5 percentage points to inflation by early 2027 due to higher energy costs. The report was requested by Democratic Rep. Brendan Boyle and was released one day after a Pentagon inspector general report reached similar conclusions about munitions shortfalls.
