Trump administration announces COVID-era loan fraud crackdown results and suspends 870,000 from federal loans
Vice President JD Vance announced in Kansas City that approximately 870,000 people suspected of defrauding COVID-era small business programs will be barred from future federal loans. The Justice Department's summer enforcement operation, dubbed 'Heartland fraud surge,' ran from June 12 through September 1 and resulted in actions against more than 160 defendants tied to approximately $245 million in intended losses. SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler said the suspensions are connected to an estimated $39 billion in suspected fraud across 45 states and territories.
