New York City and states sue Trump administration over public charge immigration rule

New York City, led by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, filed a lawsuit joined by Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County, and King County against the Trump administration's expanded public charge rule set to take effect September 18, 2026. New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a separate lawsuit with 21 other states and Washington, D.C. The rule expansion allows immigration officers to weigh additional welfare program usage, including Medicaid and food assistance, against green card and visa applicants.
