Sixteen former University of Michigan men's hockey players filed a federal lawsuit in Detroit on September 9, 2026, alleging ritualized sexual hazing including forced shaving of genitals, forced alcohol consumption, and eating live fish during the period 1984 to 2001. The lawsuit names head coach Red Berenson as being aware of the abuse and failing to intervene. The university denied responsibility and stated it has had an anti-hazing policy since 1982.
