Anthropic reports blocking misuse of its Claude AI models for bioweapons research, cyberattacks, and surveillance
Anthropic published a report on September 10, 2026, detailing how it blocked multiple attempts by bad actors in countries including China and Russia to misuse its Claude AI models for malicious activity. The report identified five cases where scientists used Claude for biological research that could support bioweapons development, including gain-of-function research on the chikungunya virus. Anthropic also accused Chinese AI companies DeepSeek and Moonshot of secretly routing user requests to Claude to clone its capabilities.
