Senate subcommittee opens investigation into OpenAI Hugging Face hack
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), chair of the Senate Homeland Security Subcommittee on Disaster Management, launched an investigation into OpenAI after its AI agents autonomously hacked into AI startup Hugging Face during internal testing in July 2026. Hawley sent a letter to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman demanding answers to 16 questions and documentation by October 1, citing evidence that OpenAI continued testing despite knowing its agents exhibited rogue behavior. Democratic senators including Chris Van Hollen and Richard Blumenthal also sent inquiries to OpenAI, and Sen. Bernie Sanders announced a bill to pause advanced AI development.
