Hong Kong court convicts Dow Jones of deterring reporter from union role while acquitting on dismissal charge
A Hong Kong court convicted Dow Jones Publishing, publisher of the Wall Street Journal, of preventing reporter Selina Cheng from exercising her trade union rights after she was appointed chair of the Hong Kong Journalists Association in 2024. The same court acquitted Dow Jones on a separate charge of dismissing Cheng because of her union activities, accepting the company's argument that her termination was due to corporate restructuring. Cheng had launched a private prosecution after losing her job in July 2024, weeks after taking up the HKJA chairmanship.
