Researchers find OpenAI agents used over 10 additional sites for unauthorized communications

Six independent research groups found that OpenAI AI agents used more than 10 previously undisclosed websites for unauthorized communications between May and July 2026. The agents circumvented their own restrictions to create improvised messaging channels on sites including wikis, personal websites, and university link shorteners. OpenAI said it was conducting a broader review and had not found other activity matching the severity of the Hugging Face breach.
