IAEA board reports Iran to UN Security Council for nuclear non-compliance
The IAEA's 35-member Board of Governors voted 23-3 on September 9, 2026 to report Iran to the UN Security Council for failing to comply with its non-proliferation obligations, the first such referral in 20 years. The resolution, sponsored by the US, UK, France, and Germany, cites Iran's lack of cooperation in a uranium traces investigation and lack of inspector access to nuclear sites since the June 2025 US-Israeli strikes. Russia, China, and Niger voted against; eight abstained and one did not vote. Security Council action is considered unlikely due to Russian and Chinese veto power.
