9/11-related illnesses have killed more people than the attacks themselves as the toll mounts nearly 25 years later
Data from the World Trade Center Health Program shows that more than 9,400 people have died from 9/11-related illnesses, surpassing the 2,977 killed in the attacks. Cancer diagnoses among enrolled responders and survivors exceed 50,000, with roughly half of the approximately 54,000 survivors treated by the program in 2026 receiving cancer-related assistance. New York City released over 170,000 pages of previously undisclosed records showing city officials misled the public about air quality around Ground Zero, and a seventh moment of silence was added to the annual commemoration ceremony to honor those who died from exposure-related illnesses.
