Oil prices surpass $100 a barrel amid escalating US-Iran conflict and Middle East attacks
Brent crude oil surpassed $100 a barrel in early September 2026 for the first time since July, driven by U.S. strikes on Iranian oil tankers and Houthi attacks on Saudi energy facilities. The U.S. destroyed five Iranian tankers on September 8 in response to attempted missile attacks on a Navy warship. Iran retaliated with strikes on shipping near the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran-aligned Houthis seized Yemen's port of Mocha and attacked Saudi oil infrastructure. The conflict, which began on February 28 with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, has severely disrupted global oil supply chains.
