IAEA confirms Assad-era Syrian reactor was configured for nuclear weapons production
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi announced on September 7, 2026, that a nuclear reactor built secretly under Bashar al-Assad was configured to efficiently produce fissile material for nuclear weapons. IAEA inspectors visited sites in Syria in August 2025, confirming cooling infrastructure consistent with a nuclear reactor and verifying approximately 73 tonnes of natural uranium metal at a previously undeclared site. Syria's new post-Assad government cooperated with the IAEA, which has placed the material under safeguards and installed monitoring cameras.
