Egyptian TV presenter Sarah Khalifa sentenced to death for drug trafficking and gang membership
A Cairo court sentenced television presenter Sarah Khalifa, 39, and 11 others to death by hanging after convicting them of forming an organized criminal gang that imported raw materials to manufacture and traffic synthetic drugs. Authorities had seized more than 750 kilograms of narcotics along with unlicensed firearms during raids on two Cairo apartments used as drug laboratories. The verdict was confirmed after Egypt's Grand Mufti issued a non-binding religious opinion as required by law, and all defendants retain the right to appeal.
