IAEA confirms Syria built an undeclared nuclear reactor under Assad

The IAEA issued a confidential report confirming that Syria's former Assad regime failed to report nuclear material, facilities, and activities, including a nuclear reactor under construction at Deir Az Zor. The agency visited several sites in Syria in August 2026 and confirmed cooling infrastructure consistent with a nuclear reactor, as well as approximately 73 tonnes of natural uranium metal at a newly declared site. Syria's new post-Assad government cooperated with the inspection and disclosed the previously undeclared site in a July 17 letter.
