Hague arbitration panel rules India must uphold Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan
The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled that the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty remains legally binding and India cannot unilaterally suspend it. The panel ordered India to limit construction on the Ratle hydroelectric plant in Kashmir pending a World Bank-appointed neutral expert's decision expected by July 2027. Pakistan welcomed the ruling while India rejected it, calling the tribunal illegally constituted.
