Expert reports find forced contraception in Greenland violated women's rights but split on genocide classification
Two expert reports released on August 28, 2026 concluded that a Danish-led forced contraception campaign targeting Greenlandic Inuit women and girls from the 1960s to 1990s violated human rights but disagreed on whether it constituted genocide. The Greenlandic government announced a reconciliation commission while Denmark approved compensation payments of 300,000 Danish crowns per victim. The Greenlandic government accepted one report's findings and rejected the other for not meeting scientific standards.
