Thousands march in Washington for voting rights ahead of 2026 midterms
On August 28, 2026, thousands of protesters rallied on the National Mall for the 'Defend the Vote' March on Washington, organized by Rev. Al Sharpton and Martin Luther King III. The march marked the 63rd anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington and protested the Supreme Court's April 2026 ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which reinterpreted key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Speakers including Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries addressed the crowd ahead of the November midterm elections.
