DOJ warns Kennedy Center may face demolition if Trump's name cannot be added to building
The Kennedy Center's Trump-aligned board voted in August 2026 to inscribe "Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump" on the facade and rename the surrounding grounds "President Donald J. Trump Plaza." In a court filing, the Justice Department warned that blocking these plans could cause donors to flee and force the building's demolition. Judge Christopher Cooper questioned the urgency and called the demolition argument a "non sequitur," and the DOJ subsequently agreed to delay any action until at least October 8, 2026.
