Zambia closes courts and detains opposition leader after disputed presidential election

Zambia's Electoral Commission declared incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema winner of the August 13, 2026 presidential election with 60% of the vote. Opposition candidate Brian Mundubile, who received 38%, rejected the results and attempted to challenge them in court, but Zambia's judiciary was shut down on the final day for filing a petition. Mundubile was subsequently detained and questioned over alleged treason.
