Nancy Kassebaum Baker, a three-term Republican senator from Kansas, died on August 21, 2026, at age 94. She was the first woman elected to a full Senate term without succeeding a spouse and the first woman since the 1930s to chair a standing Senate committee. She was best known for co-sponsoring the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 with Sen. Edward Kennedy.
