Trump administration moves to strip American Bar Association of law school accreditation authority
The U.S. Department of Education recommended on August 21, 2026 that the American Bar Association lose its status as the sole federally recognized accreditor of U.S. law schools. The recommendation will go before the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) and then to Undersecretary of Education Nicholas Kent for review. The ABA was already scheduled for a NACIQI hearing in September 2026.
