U.S. Army shuts down European drone warfare unit that studied Ukraine tactics
The U.S. Army has directed a 600-soldier drone warfare battalion within the 173rd Airborne Brigade to end its experimentation and return to traditional airborne infantry duties. The unit, formed in November 2025, was tasked with absorbing lessons from Ukraine's drone warfare against Russia. Gen. Christopher LaNeve, acting Army chief of staff, ordered the change amid a broader reshuffling after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ousted Gen. Randy George in April.
