Bangladesh's parliament elected Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party as president on August 20, 2026, by a vote of 255 to 88 over challenger Oli Ahmed. The post was vacant after former president Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned in July 2026. This was the first contested presidential election in Bangladesh since 1991.
