New Jersey governor announces software error registered 6,600 noncitizens to vote, with fewer than 400 casting ballots

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced Tuesday that a Motor Vehicle Commission software error improperly registered approximately 6,600 noncitizens to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. A preliminary analysis showed fewer than 400 of those individuals actually cast ballots. Sherrill, who took office in January 2026, ordered an investigation, the removal of erroneous registrations, and replacement of the vendor responsible for the system.

The split, in one line
Right-leaning outlets frame the error as proof Trump was right about election insecurity and demand the SAVE Act; center and left-leaning outlets emphasize that noncitizen voting is rare and accidental and that Trump's broader 250,000-voter claim rests on flawed data.
