A gas explosion collapsed an under-construction tunnel at a hydropower project in Sikkim, India, killing at least 10 workers and leaving others trapped.
A suspected methane gas explosion triggered a tunnel collapse on Monday at the 500-megawatt Teesta hydroelectric project in Samardung village, Sikkim, operated by the state-owned National Hydroelectric Power Corporation. At least 10 people were killed and additional workers remained trapped, with rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force hampered by toxic gases including methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide. Six NHPC officials who entered the tunnel to assist in the rescue also became trapped.
