American Heart Association publishes statement on caffeine and cardiovascular health
The American Heart Association published a scientific statement in the journal Circulation concluding that up to 400 milligrams of caffeine daily, roughly five eight-ounce cups of coffee, is safe for most adults and associated with lower risks of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. The statement also noted that unfiltered coffee raises LDL cholesterol, that caffeine's effects vary by genetics, and that high-dose caffeine products such as energy drinks are associated with cardiovascular harm. Individual health conditions and caffeine sensitivity were cited as factors that may affect these conclusions.
