NYC Mayor Mamdani says he is exploring arresting Netanyahu during UNGA visit, drawing rebukes from Trump and others
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a New York Times podcast interview published July 19, 2026 that he is in 'an active conversation' with the city's Law Department about whether he can direct the NYPD to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under a 2024 ICC warrant if Netanyahu visits New York for the UN General Assembly in September. President Trump responded on Truth Social declaring Netanyahu 'will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America.' UN Ambassador Mike Waltz, Sen. John Fetterman, Netanyahu's office, and legal experts all said the arrest would be legally impossible, and Bloomberg later reported Mamdani conceded the city lacks the authority to detain Netanyahu.
