Reports reveal Israeli operation to recruit former Iranian president Ahmadinejad.
The New York Times and Haaretz reported that Israel's Mossad conducted a yearslong covert operation to recruit former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as an intelligence asset and potential figurehead for a post-theocratic regime. According to the reports, former Mossad chief David Barnea met with Ahmadinejad in Budapest, and Israeli agents moved him to a safe house in Tehran after military strikes began on February 28, 2026. Ahmadinejad's office has denied the claims, and Iranian officials told the New York Times he is now in IRGC custody.
