Former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani dies at age 74

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, died on July 12, 2026, at age 74, according to Qatar's state news agency. He came to power in a bloodless coup deposing his own father and voluntarily abdicated in favor of his son Sheikh Tamim. During his 18-year reign he oversaw Qatar's transformation into a major global player through LNG exports, the founding of Al Jazeera, and hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
