Supreme Court rules states can count mail ballots received after Election Day.

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that federal law does not preempt state laws allowing mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted even if received afterward. The decision upholds Mississippi's five-day grace period and preserves similar laws in roughly 14-18 states. Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote the majority, joined by Roberts and the three liberal justices.
