Chinese dissident Dong Guangping arrives in Canada after fleeing via dinghy to South Korea

Dong Guangping, a Chinese political dissident, arrived in Toronto on an Air Canada flight on June 27, 2026, after being detained by South Korea's coast guard in May while aboard a 3.3-metre inflatable boat. His friend and Chinese Canadian activist Sheng Xue announced his arrival on X and confirmed he reunited with his wife and daughters already resettled in Canada. Dong had previously been imprisoned in China and had made multiple failed escape attempts through Thailand, Vietnam, and toward Taiwan.
