Germany loses UN Security Council seat to Austria and Portugal.
Germany failed to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term, receiving 104 votes against Portugal's 134 and Austria's 131. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul attributed the defeat to Germany's support for Ukraine and Israel, as well as Russian opposition. Austria, Portugal, Kyrgyzstan, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were elected to the council.
